Welcome to Del Mar!
Del Mar is located in the
Greater San Diego area and is known for its scenic surroundings, pristine beaches, and ample shopping and dining opportunities. Originally part of
San Diego, Del Mar became an independent city through incorporation in 1959. Today, the city encompasses 2 sq mi (5 sq km) of coastal land with the
Del Mar City Beach offering plenty of outdoor fun with activities such as swimming and surfing. Del Mar is an ideal place to visit any time of the year due to its sub-tropical climate. Popular city attractions include the
Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and Racetrack, which provides live horse racing and entertainment, while the
San Diego County Fair is a family-friendly annual event featuring exhibits, rides and games. Located just outside of Del Mar is the 2000-acres (809-ha)
Torrey Pines State Reserve Park offering walking and hiking trails, unspoiled beaches and a visitors' center. The Torrey Pine is a rare type of pine tree in the United States and Del Mar is one of the few places it grows.
