Known throughout the world as a first-rate facility, the San Diego zoo houses more than 3,800 animals of over 800 different species. The zoo grounds cover 100 acres including more than 6,500 different species of plants.
The zoo is particularly well known for its efforts to recreate the natural habitats of the animals as closely as possible. Over the years the number of specialized habitats has grown and these include Tiger River, Gorilla Tropics, Sun Bear Forest, Polar Bear Plunge and Ituri Forest. These are all very impressive.
The zoo is open year-round, but hours of operation fluctuate with the seasons. Ask about group, theme, guided and VIP tours. Address: 2920 Zoo Drive San Diego CA 92112-0551
